The Clean Girl Is Dead. Good.

The clean girl did not disappear because people suddenly stopped liking simplicity. She is disappearing because perfection stopped feeling interesting.

The clean girl was never just slicked hair, neutral clothes and expensive looking skin. She was a cultural operating system. Everything was controlled. The apartment was beige. The feed was curated. The makeup was invisible enough to look effortless and expensive enough not to be. Even spontaneity looked scheduled.

That system is losing energy.

Vogue Business is now forecasting a Spring and Summer 2027 move away from clean girl minimalism toward clashing color, DIY styling, romance, whimsy and what it calls Messy Girl Summer. That forecast matters less as a declaration that one aesthetic is dead than as evidence of a broader mood change.

People are getting tired of looking optimized.

Fashion always swings, but this swing feels connected to something larger. We have spent years being trained by feeds, algorithms, wellness culture, luxury codes and personal branding to edit ourselves into recognizable packages. Clean girl was perfect for that environment because it was easy to understand in half a second. It was a template for looking composed.

The problem with templates is that eventually everybody looks like they downloaded the same personality.

The next interesting phase of fashion will not simply be maximalism. That is too easy. It will be specificity. A strange bag. A ridiculous brooch. Hair that moves. Makeup that looks chosen rather than corrected. Clothes that reveal an obsession, a memory, a place, a character.

This is why I think the interesting girl is replacing the clean girl.

The interesting girl does not have one uniform. That is the point. She might wear a severe black suit on Tuesday and something romantic and excessive on Friday. Her style is not optimized for aesthetic consistency. It is optimized for identity.

Brands should pay attention because the same shift is coming for them. A perfectly curated feed, tasteful campaign and immaculate store can still be beautiful. But beauty without character is becoming easier to manufacture. As production tools improve, polish becomes abundant. Personality becomes scarce.

The brands that win the next cycle will not simply look better. They will feel more particular.

So yes, the clean girl may be dying.

Good.

Maybe now we can get interesting again.
